AWS launches managed Cassandra services

Today at Amazon re:Invent, Amazon announced a new ability to manage Cassandra databases on AWS.

Already used by companies as diverse as Grubhub.com, Netflix, Ooyala, Openwave, Reddit, and Uber, to manage distributed NoSQL databases, that handle large amounts of data across commodity servers,  the new Amazon Managed Apache Cassandra Service, is AWS’ attempt to offer Cassandra directly instead of through third party vendors.

The Amazon MCS is serverless so users pay for the resources they use and it can automatically scale up and down in response to application traffic, the company says. It enables the development of applications that can serve thousands of requests per second with unlimited throughput and storage (something that can be incredibly attractive for IOT customers).

With the new services, developers can run Cassandra workloads on AWS using the same application code and developer tools they’re already using. Application updates just require changing the endpoint to the one in the Amazon MCS service table, the company said.

The data is also encrypted at rest by default using encryption keys that are stored in AWS Key Management Service (KMS). And Amazon MCS is also integrated with AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) to help developers manage and access table data, the company said.

Amazon also said it would work with the Cassandra API libraries and contribute to bug fixes to the open source Apache Cassandra project. AWS is charging for on-demand capacity during the preview and at general availability the company will make provisioned throughput available for more predictable workloads.

For now, the product is a part of Amazon’s free tier and for the first three months companies can receive a free tier of 30 million write request units, 30 million read request units and one gig of storage.

Walmart tops Amazon as most-downloaded U.S. Shopping app on Black Friday

Amazon says Cyber Monday 2019 has now become the retailer’s biggest shopping day of all-time, based on the number of items sold worldwide. However, in the U.S., a different trend took shape over the big sales holiday weekend kicked off by Black Friday. This year, Walmart became the No. 1 shopping app in the U.S. on Black Friday for the first time ever, according to App Annie and Sensor Tower’s analysis.

Walmart’s app reached No. 1 among all shopping the U.S. after peaking on Thanksgiving as No. 6 among all apps (not just shopping), noted App Annie, based on both iOS and Android downloads.

Sensor Tower confirmed the same, noting that Walmart was the most-installed shopping app on the U.S. App Store on Black Friday, with 113,000 new downloads, representing a year-over-year increase of 23%.

Remarkably, this made 2019 the first year that Amazon’s app didn’t top the App Store’s list of most-downloaded shopping apps, the firm says.

Amazon’s app was a close second with 102,000 first-time installs, but this figure represented a 10% decrease from Black Friday 2018.

The further top 10 list included: Target, Best Buy, GOAT, Nike, Kohl’s, Wish, Macy’s, and Adidas. Combined, these top 10 most-download apps grew 11% year-over-year, reaching a total 527,000 installs. That’s 28.8% of all downloads for the Shopping category — the largest percentage since the Shopping category’s creation in 2015.

Overall, the number of first-time downloads in the U.S. App Store’s Shopping category on Black Friday increased 8% year-over-year, and totaled 1.8 million downloads.

Though Walmart was No 1 in the U.S., Amazon was No. 1 when apps were ranked globally instead of U.S.-only and it was No. 1 among all U.S. online-only apps.

While Sensor Tower’s analysis is based on Black Friday installs, not Cyber Monday data, Amazon’s worldwide dominance on this day does seem to back up the retailer’s own claims of its record-breaking sales on a global basis on Monday.

Amazon said customers bought “hundreds of millions” of products between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday. And it said “millions more” customers bought Amazon devices, like Echo Dot and Fire TV Stick, compared with the same period last year. (That may be true, but Amazon devices are also more broadly available to customers worldwide compared with 2018 — so perhaps this isn’t the fairest comparison.)

Walmart, meanwhile, didn’t tout its Cyber Monday event’s numbers, but said “millions” of customers joined for Black Friday sales online and in stores.

One thing that could have boosted Walmart’s app downloads this year was its focus on the in-store customer.

The app now includes an updated Store Map that makes it easier to navigate Walmart’s aisles, and it features “Check out with Me” — a way for shoppers to avoid checkout lines and instead check out with store personnel in the aisles.

AWS announces EKS on Fargate is available

Today at AWS re:Invent in Las Vegas, the company announced that Elastic Kubernetes Service is available on Fargate.

EKS is Amazon’s flavor of Kubernetes. Fargate is a service announced in 2017 that enables you to launch containerized applications without worrying about the underlying infrastructure.

“Starting today, you can start using Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service to run Kubernetes pods on AWS Fargate. Amazon EKS and Fargate make it straightforward to run Kubernetes-based applications on AWS by removing the need to provision and manage infrastructure for pods,” the company wrote in a blog post announcing the new feature.

Pods are simply a group of containers you launch on the same Kubernetes cluster. If you think about the fact that Kubernetes enables you to launch these pods in an automated fashion, it makes sense to also provision the underlying infrastructure required to run those pods in an automated fashion.

“With AWS Fargate, you pay only for the amount of vCPU and memory resources that your pod needs to run. This includes the resources the pod requests in addition to a small amount of memory needed to run Kubernetes components alongside the pod. Pods running on Fargate follow the existing pricing model,” the company wrote in the blog.

That means developers won’t have to worry about over provisioning because Fargate should run the exact number of resources needed to run that pod at any given moment and no more.

This feature is available starting today in US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), Europe (Ireland), and Asia Pacific (Tokyo).

If you can’t stop dreaming about NoSQL databases, AWS re:Invent is the closest thing to heaven that you’ll find today. At 8 AM PT/11 AM ET/4 PM GMT, some of the brightest minds in cloud computing are going to introduce the upcoming features of AWS.

Along with Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, Amazon is building the infrastructure of the web. Countless startups use AWS as their only hosting provider. So it’s going to be interesting to see what Amazon has in store to beat their competitors on the cloud front.

Attention vs. the chasm

I’ve heard from people who have theorized that Tesla’s window-breaking launch of the super-brutal pickup truck was either an intentional fail (look at all the publicity they got!) or a success (look at all the pre-orders they got!). The thinking goes that all attention is good attention, and that in our ever-faster, attention-starved marketplace, all that matters is clicks.

One way they’re thinking about it: Attention is the new innovation. I don’t agree.

A decade ago, innovation was the way to earn action from the early adopters. Innovation got you into Wired, innovation gave your fans something to talk about, innovation satisfied people in search of the new.

But marketers in search of widespread impact learned an important lesson: Innovation is fun, but innovation isn’t the answer to the challenge of reaching a larger audience.

Moore’s Crossing the Chasm helped marketers see that while innovation was the tool to reach the small group of early adopters and opinion leaders, it was insufficient to reach the masses. Because the masses don’t want something that’s new, they want something that works, something that others are using, something that actually solves their productivity and community problems.

Therefore, to move to a bigger market, tech companies need the network effect and they need patience. Tim Cook created the profitable engine that is Apple by abandoning nerds like me and focusing on making a low-innovation luxury product instead.

Amazon innovates in some areas, but their online shopping (and AWS) are insanely boring, stable and focused on reaching more people.

[Note! There’s no requirement to seek a mass audience. It’s a choice. That’s why most of us are better off serving the smallest viable audience, not jumping through the cycles necessary to cross the chasm.]

The lesson is simple:

Early adopters are thrilled by the new. They seek innovation.

Everyone else is wary of failure. They seek trust.

Back to Tesla. They’ve spent billions trying to move from a weird nerd vehicle for geeks to a mainstream car audience. And it’s working. The Model 3 is reaching people who didn’t even consider the original Roadster. This type of customer (which means most people, perhaps 80% of any market) is asking questions about reliability and wondering what they’ll tell their friends and spouse if they buy one. (If this sounds familiar, the very same thing happened with the Mac from 1984 until 1998… almost fifteen years of slowly moving to ‘normal’.)

Can I trust this brand? Can I trust this product to keep its promises? Can I trust my social circle to applaud my choice?

If Tesla was trying to continue along this proven route, the right move would be to make a pickup truck (which is, surprisingly to some, the bestselling single car model in the US) that would have done to the Ford F150 what the Model 3 does to a mid-market Mercedes. Innovative, but not too. Better, in all the ways that the mass market cares about. New, of course it’s new, but new and trustworthy.

The first customers would have been innovators (that’s always who the first customers are) but they would have had a story they could easily tell to their friends and family. The story of, “I’m smart and bold and connected and this is obviously a better choice.”

But instead, in this new age in which attention is a substitute for useful innovation, they burned that trust by seeking attention instead.

The thing is, innovation has long-term benefits for all of us. The craven search for attention at all costs does not.

Musicians have figured this out–every new song has to push the envelope, has to somehow make things better and be new enough to matter–but at the same time, they can’t burn the trust of audience they’ve earned to date. The Who can smash guitars and Dylan can mumble, but Kenny G can’t do either.

When everyone is a marketer and when everyone has a platform and when everyone can burn trust to seek attention, this is a useful lesson for each of us. Because in the short run, while attention can feel like a proxy for innovation, when it comes to actual commitments, most customers choose trust instead of commotion.

Are you eating your brain? Eric D. Brown, D.Sc.

I know — Are you eating your brain? — is a strange title…but stick with me here.

Sea SquirtI’m listening to an audiobook titled Understanding Complexity by Scott Page and heard an interesting bit of trivia about a marine animal called the Sea Squirt. What’s interesting about the sea squirt is the following:

…almost as soon as it stops moving, its brain is absorbed by its body. Being permanently attached to a home makes the sea squirt’s spinal cord and the neurons that control locomotion superfluous. Once the sea squirt becomes stationary, it literally eats its own brain.

Emphasis mine.

This little marine animal starts out life with a brain and spinal column. It moves around the sea until it finds its ‘home’ and then once it gets comfortable, it settles down and – because it never needs to move again – it eats its own brain.  It spends the rest of its life stuck in one place, day in and day out doing the same thing….without a brain.

Are you eating your brain?

When I heard about the Sea Squirt, I immediately began to think about a lot of people that I know who are ‘stuck’ in their lives.  These are the people who’ve told me how they feel like they’re not improving in their careers or their lives are just the same old routine.  These people are the same ones who don’t go out of their way to learn something new or volunteer to pick up a new project or new responsibilities at work.  These are the people who’ve found a level of comfort in their career and their lives and have – for all intents and purposes – eaten their own brains.  Of course, they’ve not really eaten their brains, but they’ve stopped expanding their ‘world’ by expanding their capabilities and experiences.

How do you ensure you aren’t “eating your brain”?

It’s quite easy actually. Just do the following:

  • Keeping Moving
  • Keep Learning

Easier said than done, right?

We’ve all been told to ‘move more’ in our lives by doctors, family and friends, especially if we’re a little overweight and they are trying to help us lose weight. When I say ‘keep moving’, I don’t really mean that you should exercise more, although exercise always helps.  What I mean is to keep moving in your career, in your relationships and an all aspects of your life. By moving, you aren’t letting yourself get too comfortable, which is the real danger here.

The other thing that you need to do is to keep learning. Learning is lifelong. Keep your eyes and ears open for new opportunities to apply your skills in different ways. Learn new approaches to how to do your job. Learn new skills. Read books. Attend networking events. Meet new people. Additionally, one of the best ways to learn is to seek out different viewpoints than your own….there’s nothing worse than only learning things that fit into your world view.

When the sea squirt finds its ‘place’ it stops moving and that’s when its brain gets absorbed into its body. That’s when it eats its own brain.  Don’t act like the sea squirt. Keep learning and keep moving. Don’t eat your own brain.
